What happened to our dreams of Freedom Money?

Bitcoin was intended to be resistant to inflation, corruption, and surveillance. While the design was groundbreaking, it was impossible for Satoshi to foresee and mitigate for the many of the problems bitcoin would encounter:

  • Cash-for-pull-requests
  • Nepotism and general fragility in Core
  • Fake bitcoin (Spark, e-cash etc.)
  • Mal-implementations
  • Treasury companies

It’s often said that you can’t fix a system problem from inside a problem system. Fortunately, bitcoin is not inherently complex, and it’s clear that many of the un-cooperative actors are merely acting rationally based on incentives; often hidden incentives. With Core and Blockstream etc. navigating through stormy weather, there’s a great window of opportunity for a fresh new team – maximally cypherpunk and freedom orientated – to help progress bitcoin and freedomtech, using a fresh approach and new methods. As well as delivering high quality and carefully designed open-source solutions and tools, we can operate within the cultural fabric, and de-silo our movement by interconnecting with individuals and organisations that share our values: doctors… theologians… campaigners… hyper-connected with a shared mission to let freedom reign.

Building on the efforts of others who refuse to submit to plutocratic centralised rule… We can connect open source money to freedom medicine; free markets; freedom of thought; freedom to worship and think and speak…

By zooming-out and recognising bitcoin merely as a sub-component of the future that we want to build, will can diffuse barriers and help connect the efforts of the many individuals and organisations with aligned values.
